What TexasCares is

TexasCares is a free guide that helps Texans find real help fast: food, a safe place to stay, rent and utility assistance, low-cost medical and dental care, mental health and substance use treatment, job programs, child care, in-home care, and more. Tell it your city and what's going on, and it points you to actual local programs — with phone numbers you can tap to call.

How it works

Behind the conversation is a directory of hundreds of Texas resources — community health centers, food banks, public mental health authorities, workforce offices, health departments, shelters, and statewide hotlines — drawn from official state and federal sources. An AI assistant helps you navigate it in plain language, in English or Spanish. Details like hours can change, so when in doubt, call ahead — and 2-1-1 Texas is always a great backup.

What it is not

TexasCares is not a person, and it is not a substitute for a licensed social worker, counselor, or medical professional. It doesn't give medical advice. In a crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.

Who's behind it

TexasCares was built by Kevin Malone, MD, and Kenneth Youens, MD, MBA. They feel that oftentimes patients' biggest problems can't be fixed with a prescription — a place to sleep, food for the week, a ride to the next appointment. This site exists so that anyone can find that help, any hour, for free without any barriers and with local vetted information.
